        Bilingual children

It is advantage to be able to speak another language easily, especially when you are travelling abroad. Recent scintific studies also show that bilingual people are mentally quicker than people who only know one language. Because of this advantage, some parents are very enthusiastic about the idea of bringing up their children to be bi- or multilingual. Children whose parents are of different nationalities clearly have good opportunities to become bilingual. The children of immigrants can easily learn two languages as well. Sally Greenfield lives and works in Munich in the south of Germany. Her husband is German and they have one son, James. "At home, my husband and I have always spoken English ot James. We speak German the rest of the time, for example when we are out in town or visiting German friends. We never force James to speak a particular language." Now at the age of 6, James feels comfortable in a German or an English speaking environment. "He confuses the two languages occasionally, but genarelly he is able to use each language in the appropiate situation," says Sally. "He can also change languages easily if it is necessary." Of course it is not always easy for children who live in bilingual or multilingual families. Some bilingual children sometimes refuse to speak one of the languages. This often happens because the child does not like the culture, people or places associated with that language. Sometimes school teachers do not make the siruation better when they put extra and unnecessary ppressure on bilingual pupils. Simon Blanchard suffered at shool during French lessons. The teacher always asked him very difficult questions on grammar. He never gave him top marks in test because he expected perfect results. Although bilingual children may have to face certain problems, the advantages of knowing more than one language well are obvious. Bilingual people are quick learners and they also know more than one culture, which makes them more tolerant towards other points of view.
