+In class I was very slow, untidy and silent. I trembled with apprehension (anxiety, worrying) nearly all the time. Sums were a mystery to me: I just couldn't add and multiply. The squared paper on which we did sums still makes me unhappy whenever I use it. Reading lessons were little better, because I didn't mind books. When I first started school, I was able to read quite well, but there were occasional words that baffled me (couldn't understand) and held me up. At last after a few weeks of patient struggling I could hear myself reading big words aloud, without much hesitation. Soon I found I could read fluently. The last word to puzzle me was "laugh". I remember looking at this word in my reader. I didn't know how to pronounce it. The sentence ran: "And so the princess began to laugh and laugh and laugh." What could it be that the princess had begun to do? I was reading aloud, the class listening hard to catch my words, for I had a very soft voice. I came to the first "Laugh", got my toungue round the "l", voiced the "a" and - it was like a miracle! - the "f" sound followed as if instincrively. "laugh", I said very slowly. As the other two "laughs" came with confidence I really felt like anything myself, for the first time since I had started school.
